Easy Tips for Brick Laying

Published by under Uncategorized

Chances are you’ve seen a brick wall or two in your lifetime, and recognized how sturdy and protective they can be against the elements. The brick can also be quite versatile. It can be featured in patio decorations, garden walls, or even the side of an apartment building. Thankfully, laying a brick is a fairly simple thing to do. You just need a few tools, some bricks, mortar, water, and a steady hand. The first thing to remember is that you need a level foundation for your bricks to be laid upon. This will allow the bricks to remain stable throughout the years. Make sure the soil is compact, and not sloping in any direction. One of the most common choices is a hard packed soil as the base. . The next step is to quarter out the area for your bricks. Dig out approximately six inches of the soil, and set it aside. Again, make sure the resulting surface is level by compacting it down again after the soil has been removed. You need to build a frame for the brick wall at this point. The frame will help you make sure the bricks you lay are level and straight. The easiest way to do this is by using a series of two by fours along the length and width of the wall.At this point, pour a few inches of concrete into the frame to act as a base. This concrete will act as a foundation for your bricks, and is also different than the mortar material that will be used later.

Once that is complete, you can remove the framework, and begin the brick laying process. Start by mixing together the mortar in a wheelbarrow following the package direction. Mix only as much mortar as you can use within 30 minutes; any more will be unusable by the end.

The next thing to do is to place a small amount of the mixture on the mortarboard. The next step is to take the trowel and scoop up some mortar and spread it along the bottom of the bric. Place it where you want it, and tap the top of the brick with the trowel. This will cause the mortar to show on the sides of the brick. The next step is the same as the one before with one exception; make sure that you use mortar on the ends as well as the bottom. A seal between the bricks will be created. It is valuable that the bricks should remain orientated correctly. The best way to do this is by checking them with the mortarboard. Once the last brick is placed, the trowel is a exceptional tool to remove the excess mortar. There you have it, you have created the start of a brick wall. Then it’s only a matter of repeitition, and making sure each layer is a half a brick off from the one below it.
